Guide to hair transplants

Hair transplants are a modern alternative to hair loss. This surgical procedure involves the removal of hair follicles from another area on the body, also known as the donor site. The follicles are then embedded into the bald parts of the head.

When was the first hair transplant done?

Even though hair transplants have been in practice since the 1950s, modern technology has transformed the procedure. There are two methods a doctor may choose from when performing a hair transplant, either follicular unit strip surgery or a follicular unit extraction.

Follicular unit strip surgery

This type of hair transplant involves a surgeon removing a strip of skin from the back of the head, the skin is then divided. The amount of sections divided depends on the person’s hair type and the size of the problem area. Hair follicles are then individually placed into the new skin grafts.

Follicular unit extraction

Here, a surgeon will shave the back of your scalp to allow the removal of old hair follicles. The area is then left to heal, the patient is left with small dots which the new hair will eventually cover. Hair follicles are then individually placed in the holes.

How long does a hair transplant take?

Both procedures normally take between 4 and 8 hours to complete.

After a hair transplant, the area should be covered with a semi permeable dressing which should be changed regularly. Also, you are advised to shampoo your hair within one-two days of the procedure, this prevents scabs forming over the hair shafts which may cause the new follicles to fall out too soon.

After the first ten days of surgery, mostly all the transplanted hairs will have fallen out due to shock. After this, (roughly two-three months after) new hairs will begin to grow, in place of the lost hair follicles. However, please note that due to shock loss, a common side effect is hair thinning, this is only temporary as the hair readjusts to its new surroundings.

How much does hair transplant surgery cost?

Hair transplants are not a budget fix for hair loss, they can be expensive. Even though the cost of a hair transplant depends on the amount of hair follicles needed, an average cost of a hair transplant is usually between £2,500 and £8,000.
